Todas las subastas / Arte contemporáneo / MEDSAN - Cracked Mask by Candlelight (蝋燭と割れた面) - LIMITED EDITION
LIMITED EDITION - NUMBERED 20 In this square format, Medsan places a young woman alone in the shadows, a pale Noh theatre mask applied to the left half of her face. The mask, with its slightly open orange-red lips, is cut by a crack that runs from the eye to the chin; right next to it, the woman’s uncovered eye lets a tear roll down along the same line. She looks downward, slightly to the side, her black hair pulled back and held by a dark hairpin. Her two hands clasp around a lit candle that she holds against her chest: this is the only source of light, and it shines from below onto the white collar, the fingers, and the bottom of the mask. The blue-purple kimono, generously wrapped, bears gold waves and scrollwork that catch the flame. The background remains a deep brown, without decor or horizon. A silent scene, held by a single flame. A dark and intimate piece, ideal for adding a Japanese and theatrical touch to a plush, nocturnal atmosphere for a collector’s interior.
