Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 981 The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the Dutch wall hook with maker’s mark from R.N. in Katwijk, the Netherlands. The previous owner, R.N. from Katwijk, stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s. According to the previous owner, the object had previously been in a private collection in the Netherlands since the 1990s. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: Decorative cast-metal wall hooks were practical fittings in Dutch domestic interiors. Mounted on wooden beams, wall panels, cupboards or other wooden furnishings, hooks of this type could be used for suspending household utensils and equipment, helping to organise kitchens and living spaces. The sturdy curved hook allowed objects to be hung securely while the shaped and decorated mounting plate gave an otherwise functional fitting a distinctive appearance. This example has a circular plate with incised linear ornament and a small stamped or punched motif, interpreted as a maker’s mark. Above is a pierced, shaped terminal, while the lower section forms the projecting hook. Such details reflect the work of specialised metalworkers, combining casting with secondary hand-finishing and decoration. Metal hooks and related fittings formed part of the broader material culture of the 16th-century Low Countries, a period characterised by prosperous towns, specialised crafts and active regional trade. Contemporary Netherlandish genre and kitchen scenes, including works by Joachim Beuckelaer and later artists such as Quiringh van Brekelenkam, Jan Steen and Gabriel Metsu, provide valuable visual evidence for the prominent use of metal fittings and suspended cooking vessels within domestic interiors. Beuckelaer’s kitchen imagery in particular illustrates how hanging equipment formed an integral part of the organisation of the 16th-century household. Cast fittings were produced within established metalworking traditions and distributed through urban and regional markets. Their survival provides insight into objects that were primarily valued for their practical function rather than as works of art. This piece therefore forms a tangible connection to domestic life in the 16th-century Netherlands, where durable metal fittings of this kind played a practical role in the organisation and use of everyday household space."
