Autograph mystic meditation by Max Jacob, written in Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire in the midst of the May 1940 débâcle, on a sheet of parchment paper, in brown ink. “Invocation O my guardian angel, carry my message to God, tell Him that I am weary of men and that I desire to live only for Him. They testify to a close intellectual and spiritual relationship between the two men. Pierre Lagarde, a careful reader and faithful friend, drew from the meditations, inventions and letters that Jacob entrusted to him the very material of his work. These pieces, of mystical and poetic scope, illustrate the direct transmission between Max Jacob’s spiritual experience and the critical interpretation Lagarde gave it.
