MAURITIUS ISLAND. Souvenirs of Mauritius. - Fruits of Mauritius]. - Mauritius. S.l.n.d. [Port-Louis, Maurice, Imprimerie lithographie de Maisonneuve et Devaux & Cie, c. 1850-1853]. Set of 3 suites in one oblong folio volume, long-grained green demimaroquin with corners, smooth spine decorated with double gilt fillets (Modern binding). Set of 56 fine hand-colored lithographs depicting the topography, fruits and trees of Mauritius. These extremely rare suites were printed in Port-Louis and lithographed from drawings by two great 19th-century Mauritian artists: Édouard Pitot (1778-1860) and Alfred Richard (1824-1880). The first suite, entitled Souvenirs de Maurice, comprises 20 plates of views and landscapes drawn from life by Édouard Pitot (4) and Alfred Richard (16): they include a view taken at Trou Tanfaron in Port-Louis, a view of the Compagnie's garden and another of the astronomical observatory; there are also 2 plates of deer hunting in the marre aux vakois, including a beautiful night scene. The BnF owns a copy of this suite with 25 plates. The second suite includes 20 superb plates of fruit drawn from life by J. Maisonneuve and Alfred Richard, all enhanced with gum arabic: banana, mango, litchi, pineapple, vangassaye, bibasse, jamalac, etc. The last suite includes 16 plates of fruit drawn from life by J. Maisonneuve and Alfred Richard, all enhanced with gum arabic. The last plate features 16 plates of trees drawn from life by Édouard Pitot. The first 4 plates are uniformly tinted, with the first one raised at the bottom. Small crack formerly repaired at bottom of one plate. A few light stains.
