DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK We offer at auction a refined and lively work from the 1980s by Mario Schifano, an absolute genius and undisputed protagonist of Italian and international Pop Art. This magnificent piece, titled "Vogue", represents a vibrant testimony to the artist's passion for the world of fashion, glamour, and mass communication, key themes of his pop-poetic vocabulary from the very beginning. What makes the lot particularly sought-after from a collecting standpoint is the technique used: the "seri-collage". In those years Schifano collaborated with the most skilled Italian printers (including renowned studios such as Studio 2R of Rinaldo Rossi in Genoa or Nino Soldano in Milan) to go beyond the concept of a simple print. Through the manual application of collage elements and variations in application, the artist transformed the edition into a sequence of pieces that are effectively unique. Even in this case, although the edition counts 100 numbered copies, no two sheets are identical. The work, kept in museum-like conditions (perfect, pristine and never framed), also boasts a reassuring and prestigious publication in the catalog "Grafica Selected", which greatly enhances its traceability and commercial appeal. BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL NOTES ABOUT THE ARTIST Mario Schifano (Homs, 1934 – Rome, 1998) was a painter, filmmaker, and a central figure of Italian and European art of the second half of the 20th century. A leading exponent of the School of Piazza del Popolo (alongside Franco Angeli and Tano Festa), Schifano is unanimously considered the soul of Pop Art in Italy, while always distinguishing himself with a deeply material, gestural painting and a wholly European and personal approach to modernity. After an onset tied to informal painting and the famous monochrome paintings, Schifano began incorporating fragments of urban reality, advertising logos (Coca-Cola, Esso), road signs, and stylized landscapes into his works. A volcanic, worldly, and troubled artist, he collaborated with intellectuals, musicians (like the Rolling Stones), and writers, becoming a cultural icon in all respects. Since the 1970s and 1980s his attention shifted almost obsessively toward new media, print media, television, and photography, which became the new “nature” to portray and reinterpret. He exhibited at the world's major institutions, participating in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale and Documenta in Kassel. His works are housed in the world’s major museums, from the Centre Pompidou in Paris to the MoMA in New York, and his figure is now historicized as one of the greatest innovative geniuses of contemporary art.
