Episode of the Revolution in Lamballe and Paris. Mémoires de la Comtesse de La Villirouët née de Lambilly (1767-1813). Paris, Lamulle et Poisson, 1902. - G. Lenôtre, Vieilles Maisons, Vieux Papiers, Paris Révolutionnaire, Paris, Perrin & Cie, 1911 The archives for this historical pleading include the following items: - Marie-Victoire de Lambilly, comtesse de La Villirouët (1767-1813), considered France's first female lawyer, for having pleaded and triumphed before a military tribunal. Manuscript containing the first pleading delivered by a woman in a court of law. It is entitled: "Defense du citoyen Jean Baptiste Mathurin Marie Mouësan Villirouët prononcée par sa femme Marie Victoire de Lambilly devant le tribunal de la commission militaire de la 17e division séante au Châtelet à Paris le 3 germinal an 7 samedi 23 mars (v.s.) 1799". 15 pp. in-folio, bound in a booklet. Bluish laid paper. A moving manuscript with ink stains, underlined or crossed-out passages and erasures, which served as the basis for his oral argument. The reworkings and underlining reveal the tone that made his plea a great success, with all the vehemence of a seasoned orator. Note, for example, on page 9 of the pleading, the comment "here a little pause", an indication of rhythm, almost theatrical. "Citizens judges, [...] Perhaps you will be surprised to see a woman pleading her husband's case herself! It's true that I sought this advantage as a favor, and that the timidity ordinary to my sex gave way to the sentiment that animates and fills me. I only saw my husband's danger, and what soul can be as electrified by his situation as I am! What sensitivity can equal the one I feel? [...] I make no secret of the fact that appearances are based on three points [...] three charges which seem to derive from the rent of 19 fructidor. His inclusion on the list of émigrés, false and inaccurate though it is, his failure to obey the aforementioned loy and the supposed name he has adopted. These are the grievances that the Loy has levelled against him, and which I shall discuss in turn. This is followed by a masterly and lengthy demonstration, with dates, places and facts to back it up, measured and poignant. It ends with these words: "Will you finally decide that form must prevail over substance? Oh no, Citizen Judges, and I think I already see your consciences frightened by the fear of making a false application of loyalty; you are fathers, husbands, there is not one of you who is not sensitive to the voice of Nature; you will not want that, without any advantage for the fatherland, the best of households be disunited ; You know the rights of misfortune, rights as sacred as that of virtue itself, and since you have allowed me to defend it, my husband cannot be sacrificed". - A contemporary handwritten copy of the pleading, notebook bound with green silk ribbon, [1] blank f., 19 pp. in-folio. Underlined passages and additions. - A handwritten copy (slightly later) in folio in contemporary marbled paper boards. Approx. 16 pp. followed by an interesting copy of the judgment handed down by the tribunal de la Commission militaire (3 pp. folded). - A long and fascinating manuscript entitled "Relation succincte de l'arrestation et du jugement de Mr Mouesan de La Villirouët adressée à ses enfants, par leur mère Marie Victoire de Lambilly". Approx. 124 pp. in-4, stapled. Tears and stains to last few leaves. It contains the precise account of all these events, from the genesis to the trial, which Marie-Victoire herself recounts to her children. Pages 115 to 124 are entitled ''Portrait de Zulmé'' (May 23, 1799): a literary text by Marie-Victoire de Lambilly, in which she portrays herself as Zulm.
