Condition: the work is in very good condition. Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) is one of the undisputed masters of Art Nouveau and a fundamental figure in the history of decorative modern art. His instantly recognizable style, characterized by elegant female figures, flowing lines, ornamental halos and rich botanical motifs, has become synonymous with fin-de-siècle Paris and the rise of graphic art as a consolidated discipline. Mucha's works enjoy lasting international demand, with high prices for posters, lithographs and decorative panels, appealing just as much to connoisseurs of visual art, design enthusiasts and interior stylists. With this particularly successful poster Mucha entered the renowned "Salon des Cents". This artists’ association held its exhibition in the halls of the journal "La Plume", whose publisher Léon Deschamps discovered the sketch during a casual visit to Mucha's atelier. After one look at the design of a "half-naked woman, her head surrounded by flowing golden tresses like an aura", he would have exclaimed: "Finish this work exactly like this, and you will have created a masterful illustrated decorative poster." This work, which uses few but very effective colors, is indeed one of Mucha's most inspiring creations. The woman, as a mysterious dream-figures, characterized by brush, goose-feather and a trophy-like object, appears as a personification of both Art and Muse. The poster appeals through the sublime rendering and the conciseness of the calligraphic lines, which recall the stained glass windows of Art Nouveau. The unusual central element of the composition, nevertheless typical for Mucha, is the glorious golden hair, styled as ornamentation. This arabesque swirl, jokingly called "maccaroni", would become a much imitated feature of the artist.
