Margarete Simrock-Michael (1870–1940). - Portrait einer jungen Dame

Margarete Simrock-Michael (Leipzig 1870–1940 Nobitz). "Portrait of a Young Lady" (*Portrait einer jungen Dame*). Ca. 1910. Watercolor on paper by the German painter, portraitist and illustrator. Hand-signed with a monogram—as was her custom—in the lower right corner. Annotated on the reverse ("Aquarell M. Simrock-Michael"). Antique frame with glass. Diameter: 15 cm. Margarethe Simrock-Michael’s work falls primarily within the realm of academic realism, yet shows a clear influence of German Impressionism—a movement that dominated the Berlin art scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her output focused on refined portraits of ladies and notable figures of the era. She studied in Berlin under Karl Gussow and Franz Skarbina (one of the founders of the Berlin Secession). From the latter, she adopted a technique that moved away from academic rigidity in favor of freer, more dynamic, and textured brushstrokes—qualities particularly evident in the backgrounds and the folds of the clothing.
