In the center, a feline head emerges from a pale mass of ochre and white. The volumes are held more by gesture than by drawing: blues enclose it, cross it, and emphasize its contours and shadows. On the right, a vivid red stands out as an accent. Above, a broad field of reddish brown, brushed with wide strokes, closes the composition and isolates the head. The animal is not described: it is present. The impasto is thick, the revisions visible, the brushstrokes superimpose without trying to smooth them. The Cobra vocabulary is immediately recognizable: the rustic figure, the spontaneous line, the tension between animal presence and abstraction. Color structures, gesture sustains the form. The simple wooden frame, made by the artist, completes the whole without domestifying it. Biography Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a Belgian artist first recognized as a marble sculptor, notably in Carrara and in Bardiglio. Alongside this activity, he pursued a lifelong pictorial production that remained for a long time in the studio, today sought after. Strongly influenced by Cobra (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant), he preserves its primitive figure, direct gesture, and freedom of material. This large oil from 1972 is a characteristic example: an animal presence held by color more than by drawing, in a frank and physical execution.
