Todas las subastas / Arte contemporáneo / Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) - Composition Cobra énergique
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) Composition Cobra Techniques mixtes (wash, ink and gouache) on paper, circa 1975 Signature: Unsigned on the front. Studio stamp on the back: “Marcus de Vestele – Atelier de l’artiste” Dimensions: 50 × 36 cm Sold unframed Condition: Good overall studio condition. Slight traces of aging, consistent with a work from the 1970s directly from the artist’s studio. Provenance: Artist’s studio of Marcus de Vestele. Description Powerful Cobra composition by Marcus de Vestele, made around 1975. A large eye dominates the right side, surrounded by nervous black lines. Around it weaving brown and beige shapes: curves, masses, hatching, silhouettes barely suggested. The wash in ochre and earth tones dialogues with the accents of black ink. The gesture is spontaneous, almost violent, typically Cobra: elemental figuration, economy of means, constant tension between the human gaze and abstraction. The work has a raw, expressive presence, at once animal and architectural. A characteristic piece of Marcus de Vestele’s paper production in the 1970s, coming directly from the artist’s studio. Biography Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a major Belgian artist, primarily recognized as a sculptor working in marble (notably in Carrara and with Bardiglio marble). Alongside his sculptural practice, he developed throughout his life an important pictorial output, long kept private and today sought after by collectors. Strongly influenced by the Cobra movement (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant…), Marcus de Vestele drew inspiration from it to create abstract-figurative compositions of great expressive power. His works on paper from the 1970s are characterized by spontaneous line, free gesture and a constant tension between figuration and abstraction. His drawings, washings and gouaches combine the discipline of the sculptor with Cobra’s lyrical and gestural explosion. Directly from the studio, this on-paper production constitutes an essential and singular facet of his œuvre, occupying a distinct place in Belgian art of the second half of the 20th century.
