Small visible flaws (crackling and light surface wear) as well as some waviness to the paper, in line with a paper work from the 1970s coming directly from the artist’s studio. Provenance : Artist’s studio of Marcus de Vestele. Description Beautiful Cobra composition by Marcus de Vestele, circa 1975. Several silhouettes stand in an indeterminate space. On the left, a blue figure stretched out, almost fluid, lets long drips run. In the center, elemental black shapes, like schematic characters. On the right, a more massive figure, dressed in black with an orange head, appears to be in motion before color masses (pink, yellow, brown, gray). The treatment is typically Cobra: spontaneity of gesture, pure and contrasted colors, a permanent tension between elementary figuration and abstraction. The scene has a theatrical presence, at once fragile and monumental, like a rite or a farce. A colorful, narrative work, characteristic of Cobra on paper by Marcus de Vestele in the mid-1970s, directly from the artist’s studio. Biography Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a major Belgian artist, best known as a sculptor working with marble (notably in Carrara and with Bardiglio marble). Alongside his sculptural practice, he developed, throughout his life, a significant pictorial production, long kept confidential and today sought after by collectors. Strongly influenced by the Cobra movement (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Constant…), Marcus de Vestele drew on it to create abstract-figurative compositions of great expressive power. His paper works from the 1970s are characterized by spontaneous line, free gestural energy and a permanent tension between figuration and abstraction. His drawings, wash drawings and gouaches combine the rigor of a sculptor with the lyrical and gestural explosion inherent to Cobra. Directly from the studio, this on-paper production constitutes an essential and distinctive facet of his oeuvre, occupying a singular place in Belgian art of the second half of the 20th century.
