Magnificent Vintage Ring With Hardstone Cameo & Diamonds In Gold, Circa 1985

We associate cameo ornaments primarily with the 19th century and the stylistic periods of classicism and historicism. However, carved depictions continued to enjoy great popularity beyond this period. This yellow gold ring is a good example of the enduring popularity of cameos in the following century. The ring from the 1980s presents the portrait of a youthful lady with a flowing dress and butterfly wings at its center. It depicts Psyche, an ancient king's daughter whose beauty was so great and famous that she aroused the jealousy of the goddess Venus. After some intrigue, she finally married Cupid, Venus' messenger of love, and became an immortal goddess. The butterfly as a symbol of the soul is her attribute and this is how she found her way into art. The cameo is held by an organically curved yellow gold setting. Four small diamonds further enhance the design. We discovered the ring here in Berlin.
