Todas las subastas / Varios / Luis Martínez Delgado (1933) - Vue du Port de Ondárroa
- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Hand-signed. - The port of Ondárroa has neither the soft lyricism nor the easy staging that urban summer vacationers seek for their August postcards; it is, let’s say from the outset, a hard port, a pure working artifact, where the Cantabrian Sea crashes against the breakwaters with the relentless stubbornness of truly real things. Here the landscape smells exactly like what nautical existence should smell like: salting, diesel, moldy netting, and the thick fat that drips from the backs of sardines in the fish market. The men who inhabit it do not walk the wharves to watch the sunset, but with the heavy step of someone whose feet are stuck in rubber boots and shoulders bent by Cantabrian swell; faces chiseled in stone by salt air, a harsh gravity and a brief, rough speech, polished by centuries of battling the squalls. In the tight mass of their fishing boats, jammed against the harbor stones, there is a beauty without adornment, an aesthetics of demand and physical effort that overwhelms for its absolute lack of literature: Ondárroa is simply a workshop of iron and wood cast into the mouth of the sea, where life is earned every dawn with arm strength and without the slightest concession to nostalgia. - Image dimensions without frame: 90 x 70 cm / 110 x 90 cm with exclusive, custom-made frame.
