French edition of this important monograph on Vittore Carpaccio, translated by H. L. de Perera. The book examines the life of the Venetian painter, his era, and his entire body of work, with particular emphasis on his major narrative cycles, notably *The Legend of Saint Ursula*. Extensively illustrated, including, according to the title page, 26 photographic plates and 229 black-and-white engravings printed as inserts, reproducing paintings, details, documents, and comparative works. Copy preserved in its original binding. The cover is browned and worn, with small tears and marginal losses; a few defects and tears along the margins of some leaves; the interior is generally well preserved.
