Article on Christmas 1944 published on the front page of the newspaper *Ce soir* on December 26, 1944. “Christmas. It is not necessarily a joyful occasion. When the Child Jesus is born in the stable, it is only after his parents—miserable and destitute—have wandered the roads, knocked in vain on a hundred doors, and sought refuge everywhere only to be turned away. And if the shepherds follow the star to him, it is not necessarily with a light heart; at that moment in human history—the time of the Roman occupation of Judea, of Herod the child-slayer—how could the people be happy? ” Aragon draws a parallel with Christmas 1944, evoking the stalags, Field Marshal von Runstedt, the “Pétainists, Maurrassians, and collaborators,” anonymous denunciations, and so on. “So for some people in France—who are free, whom we pass on the street, whom we rub shoulders with on the subway—the Christ Child this year has the air of a paratrooper; he wears a helmet and carries a submachine gun, he is not a harbinger of peace, he is a murderer of the French; and Santa Claus puts bombs in little children’s shoes. For some people in France, who are pinning their hopes on von Rundstedt to keep the justice system from sticking its nose into their affairs, to avoid returning the Jewish property they acquired from the enemy, to bring back the Gestapo, Darnand and his killers, for new Oradours, for the reopening of the torture chambers"... And he concludes: "Christmas in France, whose guiding star is the light of freedom. Christmas in France, where our people unite around their eternally youthful hope.
