Loro blonyo - Indonesia (No reserve price)

These handsome pair of Loro Blonyo figures are carved from wood and finished with a dark paint. Loro Blonyo statues were used, among other occasions, during wedding ceremonies in Central Java. This set comes from my own private collection, and I personally brought them back around 2000 from Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia. They depict Dewi Sri, the goddess of the rice harvest, and her consort Sadono. Dewi Sri is a deity associated with rice and the harvest, linked to fertility and prosperity. The statues originate from Java's pre-Islamic culture and were later incorporated into the syncretic ritual practices of the Javanese people. Traditionally, the figures were placed at the foot of the bridal bed with the heavens of Krobongan to promote a prosperous marriage. They were also commonly used to promote a good rice harvest. This practice was initially reserved for royal and noble families, but later spread to other segments of the population. This is clearly a set used by ordinary families. The clothing of these two figures is based on traditional Javanese attire. Both figures are depicted kneeling and wear batik sarongs. Sadono wears a traditional Java head covering of cloth — tightly drawn over the head.
