In the foreground the tranquil surface of the water stretches out, rendered with rapid and layered horizontal brushstrokes; in the center, a small rock interrupts the continuity of the lake surface, while on the right a rocky promontory covered in vegetation emerges. The palette, deliberately restrained in greys, greens, browns and dulled blues, yields a veiled, nearly autumnal luminosity. The painting is concise and immediate, with particular attention to the effects of light on the water: a hallmark of Gignous’s landscape research, in which luminosity variation plays a central role. The subject is fully coherent with the artist’s repertoire, who repeatedly painted Lake Maggiore, the Ticino, and landscapes of the Varese area; lacustrine views are, in fact, one of the most recognizable cores of his output.
