LIME SPATULA OR KENA Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Massim region, Milne Bay Province Bone, mother-of-pearl, pig tusk, spondylus shell discs, trade glass beads, and wild banana seeds. Beautiful patina from age and use. H. 40 cm – W. 14 cm Provenance: - Harry Beran Collection. Magnificent kena, or chieftain’s lime spatula, adorned with an imposing crescent-shaped pommel bearing an assemblage of elements of complex value, including sections of mother-of-pearl, a pig’s tusk, spondylus shell coin discs, trade glass beads, and wild banana seeds. This elaborate decoration signifies and underscores the high political standing and elevated status of its owner. The bone spatula displays a beautiful and substantial patina from use, with traces of betel and a golden hue.
