LEWIS (John Frederick). Sketches of Spain & Spanish Character made during his Tour in that Country in the Years 1833-4. London, F. G. Moon, John F. Lewis, n.d. [1836]. In-folio, burgundy half-chagrin, bold gilt fillet, smooth spine, gilt title (Mid-19th century binding). First edition of this magnificent album on Spain, including a lithographed title adorned with a vignette, a dedication leaf with table on verso, and 25 beautiful lithographs depicting genre scenes and costumes. (Colas, no. 1858; Tooley, no. 302; not in Foulché-Delbosc). John Frederick Lewis (1805-1876), an English Orientalist painter and member of the Old Water-Colour Society in London, painted many Oriental and Mediterranean scenes. He also produced an album of lithographs of the Alhambra. A rare copy with the plates in period colors. Some spotting, one serpente partly torn. Corners dulled, damage to headpieces. Provenance: Stéphane Clavreuil bookshop.
