His masterworks such as “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper” are regarded as milestones of art history, mainly because of his innovative techniques such as sfumato, which creates soft transitions between light and shadow. This technique influenced artists such as Raphael, who in “The School of Athens” also used a perfect balance between light and perspective, and Caravaggio, who picked up Leonardo’s light studies to create dramatic chiaroscuro in his Baroque paintings. Leonardo is often compared with Michelangelo, another Renaissance genius who became famous primarily through his sculptures. While Michelangelo in works like “David” pursued a heroic representation of the human body, Leonardo dedicated himself to precise anatomical investigation. These studies, which viewed the human body from a scientific perspective, had a great influence on the art world and inspired later artists and scientists. Both masters sought the perfect representation of the body, but in different ways: Michelangelo through idealized form, Leonardo through scientific accuracy. Leonardo’s interdisciplinary approaches, which united art and science, were also taken up by later artists such as Albrecht Dürer, who also conducted anatomical studies to improve his art. Dürer’s drawings, such as the famous “Praying Hands,” show how deeply he engaged with the proportions of the human body – similar to Leonardo. Both artists laid the foundations for an art that was based on science and natural observation, which prepared the transition to the modern scientific method. Leonardo’s influence on science extended far beyond his time. His studies on flight mechanics and hydrodynamics made him a pioneer in engineering, similar to Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton, who also explored the laws of nature through observation and experiments. Leonardo, however, was unique in his ability to combine art and science, which made him one of the most important innovators of the Renaissance.
