Léo Taxil et Paul Foucher / Frid'rick & Lerivérend - La Religion du

Superb illustrated edition of this work which sits in the tradition of polemical and satirical literature aimed at religious institutions, particularly the Catholic Church and the influence of the clergy in 19th-century French society. Its provocative title announces a denunciatory approach that seeks to associate certain religious practices, certain ecclesiastical behaviors, or certain forms of spiritual authority with the idea of fault, abuse, and concealment. To understand the scope of this publication, it is essential to place it within the intellectual and political context of a France haunted by sharp clashes between anti-clerical circles, defenders of Catholic tradition, and supporters of a clearer separation between religion and civil institutions.
