Circa 1900. Verrerie Legras & Cie in St-Denis. France Magnificent old large LEGRAS vase, famous model “TOUL,” in opacified-glass blown with warmly orange, amber colors offering superb twilight nuances that seem to evolve with the light and give the decor the atmosphere of a landscape observed at dusk. On this luminous ground unfolds a charming enamelled lake landscape delicately hand-painted, designed as a true panorama circling the vase. In the foreground rise tall trees with slender trunks whose foliage, worked in subtle nuances of olive green and brown, frame the peaceful waters of a lake. On the opposite shore appears a succession of hills and wooded copses finely drawn, while several small sailing boats move quietly on the water, their dark silhouettes reflected delicately on its surface. As you turn the vase, the landscape transforms and progressively reveals itself: the trees change perspective, the shores recede, the sailboats appear and then disappear behind the large trunks... A particularly successful composition that gives this piece the impression of a true miniature panoramic landscape imprisoned in glass. The décor benefits from remarkable artisanal enameling work, blending with great finesse drawn parts and thicker textured areas. The foliage and the ground, almost in relief, contrast beautifully with the satin transparency of the glass and enhance the depth of the scene. This poetic vision of nature fully fits into the world of François-Theodore Legras, deeply attached to the forest landscapes of his Vosges homeland, whose woods, stretches of water and tree-lined horizons provided a recurring source of inspiration for his landscape creations. Beautiful height of 28.5 cm, giving this piece a very handsome volume and remarkable decorative presence. LEGRAS… the great master of the forest François-Theodore Legras, sometimes nicknamed “the Emperor of Saint-Denis,” never forgot his Vosgian origins. Son of a woodcutter and himself familiar from a young age with the forest world before his glassmaking apprenticeship, he maintained throughout his career a deep sensitivity to nature. At the turn of the 20th century, this fascination expresses itself with particular force in his famous landscape décors, where majestic trees, lakes, rivers, mountains and wooded horizons become as many subjects allowing the glassmaker to transform the surface of the vase into a true painting. This superb vase “Toul” is a very fine illustration: a work where glass, light and enamel meet to render the silent poetry of a lake bordered by trees under the last light of day. Proof of the famous model “Toul,” a perfectly authenticated and illustrated vase in the renowned Catalogue répertoire Raisonné "Legras Maître Verrier" In very good condition for its great age — over 125 years! — with a particularly fresh decoration and magnificent colors, always vivid and warm, blending in a superb harmony of autumnal and twilight tones. To note only a discreet small firing defect / air bubble quite common inside the neck, a testimony to the artisan techniques of the era, with no impact on the overall aesthetics of this magnificent piece. A very beautiful and authentic Legras piece from the very early 20th century, appealing both by its large size, its documented Toul form and especially by the poetry of its exceptional lake landscape engraved.
