Larimar 2 x stud earrings- 2.08 g - (2)

2 Larimar stud earrings / cabochon / new Bezel-set in 925 sterling silver Total weight: 2.08 g / 10.4 ct 7.7 mm x 7.7 mm x 18.0 mm New and unworn Larimar is a blue-white veined variety of pectolite, which has so far been found at only two localities: in a transformed ultrabasic volcanic rock on the Barahona Peninsula in the Dominican Republic and at the “Fittà” near Soave in Italy. Larimar has nothing to do with the blue amber also found on Hispaniola, which is sometimes processed in the same facilities in Puerto Plata and in the same manner as pectolite. Larimar was only discovered in 1974 (the claim that Larimar was already known to the island’s indigenous people is a legend) and has been commercially used as a jewelry gemstone since the early 1980s. Compared with white pectolite, Larimar is harder (up to 6 on the Mohs scale) and occurs exclusively in dense, fine-crystalline aggregates. The sky-blue color is due to trace amounts of vanadium (not copper, since there are Cu-free Larimar specimens); there are also green varieties, whose color presumably results from lattice defects. Shipping as insured registered mail.
