Rings with two elements that define the design were understood in the years of the turn of the century as a symbol of two lovers: Connected yet in motion, becoming one piece yet recognizable as separate elements: Is this not how a happy relationship should be? Already Napoléon Bonaparte adored such a ring to his future wife Joséphine de Beauharnais in 1796 for the engagement. In this type of ring, two gemstones or pearls set opposite each other always symbolize the merging of two souls. In this ring, a warmly sparkling old European cut diamond weighing about 1.18 ct and a rosewood coloured tourmaline face each other. The ring band is inlaid with platinum and the curved ends with more old European cut diamonds, so that the entire show side glows. Yet the tourmaline is set in gold, highlighting its warm hue, just as the platinum enhances the cool brilliance of the diamonds. The ring was created in Vienna, as its hallmarks reveal. It is executed in a classic artisanal manner. Its powerful construction and its warm colourfulness let us date it to the years around 1950. The diamonds were obviously set into the ring in a second use. So to speak a Mariage of old and new - quite fitting for the ring type of Toi et Moi! The ring has been preserved very well in an old case.
