LARGE ROMAN BRONZE PHALERA WITH CUPID

Ca. AD 300. A large cast bronze phalera with a bust of Cupid against a circular backing plate. The figure has a rounded face with prominent eyes, a straight nose, full lips and thick, wavy hair arranged in locks around the forehead and temples. The bare chest is adorned with beaded straps terminating in paired tassels, joined by a circular medallion between the breasts. A wing extends behind the right shoulder, with individually rendered feathers. The backing plate has several attachment holes around its edge. Size: 270mm x 245mm; Weight: 1.48kg Provenance: From a private UK collection; formerly in the S.S. collection, assembled from the 1970s onwards.
