Large Antique Persian Malayer Rug Circa 1920 - 15 ft 6 in x 11 ft

Curated collection of antique, vintage and modern rugs Large Antique Persian Malayer Rug Circa 1920 Size: 15 ft 6 in x 11 ft 6 in (4.72 m x 3.51 m) Provenance: Property of a New York dealer An unusually large Malayer carpet featuring an elegant allover lattice of delicate flowering vines around a compact central medallion. The warm ivory and camel field is framed by a striking dark-blue border filled with bold floral palmettes. Room-size Malayer carpets of approximately 15 by 11 feet are far less commonly encountered than runners and smaller village rugs. Its scale, subdued coloration, and intricate design make this an exciting decorative example from the region. Condition Request Condition Report The carpet is in generally good overall condition. The ends are in good order. The side selvages are not entirely original, with at least one having been replaced. The field shows several areas of professional restoration, skillfully executed and difficult to detect from the front. Within one border there is a restored square area measuring approximately 1.5–2 x 1.5–2 inches, where the foundation was reconstructed and the pile reinstated. A more substantial restoration is present elsewhere along the border, measuring approximately 12–16 x 10–12 inches, involving reconstruction of a section of the border. This repair is not readily visible from the face but is clearly evident from the reverse. There is also another substantial restored area at one end, measuring approximately 12–14 x 8–10 inches. This work has likewise been professionally carried out and is discreet from the front, though clearly visible from the reverse. Despite these significant but well-executed restorations, the carpet presents very well overall and retains strong decorative appeal, an attractive palette, and a notably luminous surface.
