A large cabochon of striped agate captures the eye on the front of this locket. Similar to the inseparable affection of two lovers, the silvery-white bands and the deep black of the agates are connected to each other and hold together, come what may. This is how the ancient author Pliny interpreted this wonderful semi-precious stone and saw it as a symbol of love and a sign of solidarity. Its use in a locket, the purpose of which is to create a lasting memory of loved ones, therefore makes perfect sense. The oval pendant combines the large agate cabochon with other small agates and shimmering pearls. A star made of pearls and gold is also placed on the center of the agate. The motif of loving memory is invoked twice, in the material of the agate and the motif of the star. The pearls, as an attribute of Venus, the goddess of love, contribute even more. A delicate band of black enamel runs around the outside of the design; it is these small details that demonstrate the high quality of the work. The locket has a spacious glazed compartment at the back where a personal memento can be safely stored. Pieces of jewellery in round or oval shapes with large cabochons were fashionable in the 1860s. Beautiful examples are collected, for example, by David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010, p.168 and 183, also with stars placed on the cabochon. The agates most probably came to Europe from Brazil and were cut in Idar-Oberstein in Hunsrück. The pendant may originate from Germany, but also from England; unfortunately, it bears no hallmarks that would more precisely indicate its place of origin. The pendant loop was added at a later date. The piece of jewellery was most likely originally created as a brooch.
