Saint Benedict of Nursia, founder of Western monasticism, was known in life for his great piety and his power over the forces of evil. The medal that bears his name was created to be a tool of spiritual protection, used for centuries by exorcist priests and laypeople to defend themselves against demonic influences. The medal is a condensed prayer of protection. In the center, Saint Benedict of Nursia stands. He holds the cross, symbol of his spiritual authority as father of Western monasticism. In his other hand, he holds the book of his Holy Rule, which symbolizes a life founded on order, prayer, and discipline, the foundations of a spiritual fortress against chaos. One can distinguish the cup of poison broken and the raven, recalling the miracles where he escaped assassination attempts, proving his divine protection against attacks of evil. The Latin inscription around the scene, "EIUS IN OBITU NRO PRAESENTIA MUNIAMUR", is a powerful prayer meaning: "That by his presence we be protected at the hour of our death." This side of the medal is a direct invocation of Saint Benedict’s protection, not only against the evils and temptations of daily life but also and especially for the crucial moment of passage, ensuring ultimate protection for the soul. The exorcism formula traditionally associated with this medal is implicitly present, carried by the figure of the Saint himself. Wearing this cross is to carry with you permanently this prayer of authority and protection, a constant reminder of the victory of light over darkness.
