LANGE (Dorothea) & TAYLOR (Paul). — An American Exodus. - Lot 151

LANGE (Dorothea) & TAYLOR (Paul). — An American Exodus. A Record of Human Erosion. Paris, Jean-Michel Place, “Histoire figurée” series, 1999. Quarto, paperback with illustrated flapped cover, featuring numerous black-and-white photographs by Dorothea Lange. New edition edited by Sam Stourdzé. Text by Paul Taylor. Bilingual French-English edition. ISBN: 2-85893-513-0 — EAN: 9782858935130. This French edition, published on November 10, 1999, is a facsimile of the original work published in New York in 1939 by Reynal & Hitchcock, to which critical essays and a French translation have been added. A landmark of American documentary photography *An American Exodus* is one of the great photographic books dedicated to the Great Depression. In it, Dorothea Lange and her husband, the economist Paul Schuster Taylor, document the exodus of rural Americans ruined by the economic crisis and the agricultural upheavals of the 1930s, particularly their migration to California. The book’s fundamental originality lies in the close integration of Lange’s photographs, testimonies gathered from the migrants, and Taylor’s economic and social analysis. It thus stands as one of the pioneering examples of the documentary photo book conceived as a work in its own right. This edition is particularly noteworthy: it reproduces the original book and includes supplementary material edited by Sam Stourdzé. It is the first French edition, while retaining the English text and the layout of the 1939 volume. The photographs, taken primarily in Alabama, Texas, New Mexico, and California, depict farmworkers, sharecroppers, and migrant families affected by the crisis. The images reproduced in your copy—*Hoe Culture, Alabama*, 1937, the road to the Pacific Coast, and farmworkers near Calipatria in 1939—are integral to this major documentary work. A beautiful, complete copy, in very fresh condition inside, with lovely, high-contrast photographic reproductions. The flap cover is intact, showing only a few slight signs of handling, minor soiling, and scuffing, mainly on the back cover. Corners and headbands are slightly scuffed. Overall, the book is in good to very good condition.
