L'ORME (Philibert de). Nouvelles inventions pour bien bastir et à petits fraiz. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Fédéric Morel, 1561. In-folio, blue paper half-cartonnage, vellum spine with long title in ink (19th century binding). First edition of the first book by Lyon architect Philibert de L'Orme (1514-1570). Meticulously printed in Roman and italic characters, embellished with an alphabet of ornate lettering. Printer's mark on title. The illustration includes 34 woodcuts, 23 of which are full-page. The last leaf features an attractive woodcut allegorical vignette of the "prudent architect" with his compass (Fowler, no. 98; Mortimer, French, no. 354). Considered the founder of the French architectural revival, Philibert de L'Orme was the principal architect of the French court during the Renaissance, working on such projects as the Château d'Anet, the grand staircase in the main courtyard of the Château de Fontainebleau, and the bridge over the Cher River on which the Château de Chenonceau stands. In this treatise dedicated to King Charles IX, the architect introduces a new arch-frame technique based on the assembly of small, interlocking pieces of wood. With this ingenious system, which he claims as his own, he brings about an architectural revolution that saves wood and facilitates the maintenance and replacement of structures (roofs and floors) at lower cost, making them lighter and stronger. According to the author, it can even cover spans unimaginable with ordinary processes limited by the size of the beams. For example, he mentions the possibility of building large bridges with a single arch almost 400 meters long! He presented prodigious projects, such as a great royal "basilica" or a convent for the nuns of Montmartre, which anticipated the great achievements of the contemporary era (Yves Pauwels, CESR, Tours). Armorial cold-stamp on title. Large South Library engraved armorial bookplate dated 1860 with the motto Sapere Aude. Small halo on edge of ten leaves. Provenance: Stéphane Clavreuil bookshop.
