λ JEREMY ANNEAR (BRITISH B. 1949), ABSTRACT COMPOSITION, 1986

λ JEREMY ANNEAR (BRITISH B. 1949) ABSTRACT COMPOSITION, 1986 Gouache Signed with initials and dated ''86' (lower right) 59 x 83.5cm (23 x 32¾in.) Exeter born Jeremy Annear spent his childhood holidays in Cornwall, where the vibrant modernist arts community of West Penwith encouraged his early desire to be an artist. He studied at Exeter College of Art and was taught by notable figures including Bernard Cohen and Harry Thubron. He was deeply influenced by European masters including Miró, Klee, Picasso, and Braque as well as by the artists that he grew up studying, including Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Roger Hilton, Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron and Sir Terry Frost. His work is seen as a natural progression from the earlier tradition and he is often described as a St Ives Modernist. In 1987, Annear moved to Cornwall to paint full-time, becoming a member of both the Newlyn and Penwith Societies of Artists, although he also spent time living and working in Germany and Australia in the 1990s. His work builds images from layered shapes and complex surface textures, using natural earth tones, often set against shades of blue. Condition Report: The work is framed and glazed, and was not examined out of it frame. There are a few very minor scattered pin-hole sized marks across the work, and the paper very slightly undulates along the upper edge. There are two small unpainted areas to the top edge and upper left corner of the work, as left by the artist. Otherwise, the work appears to be in good overall condition.
