Kyanite predominantly develops prismatic to tabular crystals with a glassy luster on the surfaces, but it also occurs in fibrous or granular to massive mineral aggregates. In pure form, kyanite is colorless and transparent. Due to multiple refractions of light caused by lattice defects or polycrystalline structure, it can appear white and, through trace impurities, take on light- to dark-blue, blue-violet, greenish, brownish, and rarely reddish colors, with transparency decreasing accordingly.
