An impressive and finely decorated antique Japanese porcelain charger with a diameter of no less than 40 cm, dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho period (circa 1900–1925). The front is skillfully hand-painted in a deep underglaze blue shade with a classical Asian depiction of two Japanese cranes (tancho) amid pine trees and rocky cliffs by the water — traditional symbols of happiness and a long life. The broad, elegantly fluted edge is richly adorned with a geometric honeycomb pattern (tortoise motif) and floral cartouches. The outermost edge is finished with an iron-oxide brown border (kuchi-beni). On the lower right, the decorator's or painter's workshop is signed with a red seal mark and black calligraphy. The back shows four stylized floral branches around the foot ring. It also bears an impressed square blind stamp (toin) with the characters for
