KRULL (Germaine). Métal. Paris,Librairie des Arts décoratifs, s.d. [1928]. In-4, double spiral binding, illustrated card folder on front cover, laces (Publisher's binding). First edition, illustrated with 64 remarkable photographs by Germaine Krull reproduced in phototypesetting. Introductory text by Florent Fels. The book cover features a composition by Lou Tchimoukow. Germaine Krull (1897-1985), an icon of photographic modernity, published Métal in 1928, a book that marked the entry of the industrial and urban world into the aesthetics of the interwar period. Poetry and graphic intensity come together in her images of architecture and metal structures - her "irons", as she called them - whose points of view alternate between plunging and counter-plunging (Luce Lebart, Une Histoire mondiale des femmes photographes, p. 150). (The Books of 101 Books, pp. 46-47: "an early celebration of the industrial age, the age of machines"). Small tear on edge of last plate. Spine of dust jacket renewed; trace of label removed from upper left corner of first cover, decoration of affected part redone. Provenance: Stéphane Clavreuil bookshop
