Göran Wärff – Kosta Boda – Polar – large heavy (2491 grams) vintage glass sculpture / candle holder – Sweden, 1970s Especially beautiful and very heavy vintage Polar candle holder / glass sculpture, designed by the famous Swedish glass artist Göran Wärff (1933–2022) for Kosta. The iconic Polar series was introduced in 1974. Wärff drew inspiration for this series from nature, water, ice and light. Kosta Boda describes Polar as glass sculptures reminiscent of moving water frozen in time. This is an early vintage version from the 1970s, made in very heavy, solid clear glass. The irregular vertical glass formations rise like icicles or frozen water streams from the round base upward. Because of the different glass thicknesses, organic structures and air inclusions, beautiful light refractions and reflections are created. In the center there is a recess for a candle. When used, the light is broken and dispersed through the thick glass, creating, between the sculptural glass formations, a particularly interplay of light and shadow. Even without a candle, the object is excellent as a standalone Scandinavian glass sculpture. This version is particularly substantial: at a height of only 14.5 cm, the piece weighs no less than 2,491 grams. An almost identical unsigned Polar has been documented by a Swedish auction house as cast clear glass from the 1970s/80s, with dimensions of about H 14 × Ø 15 cm. Signed pieces of roughly the same size are also known with the inscription “Kosta 67513 Wärff”; thus a piece of H 15 × Ø approx. 14 cm is documented. There is an example offered on the design market for hundreds of euros, and on 1stDibs around €753. Designer: Göran Wärff Manufacturer: Kosta, Sweden Series: Polar Design introduced: 1974 Period: 1970s Possible model reference: 67513* Material: solid clear glass Dimensions: H 14.5 × Ø 15 cm Weight: 2,491 grams Signature: unsigned Style: Scandinavian Modern / organic modernism Function: candle holder / tea light holder / glass sculpture Condition: good vintage condition with normal age- and use-related signs. On the underside there are superficial scratches, appropriate to age, use and the considerable weight of the piece. See the photos for a good impression of the condition. An impressive and very heavy piece of Swedish glass design from the 1970s, in which Göran Wärff’s fascination with water, ice and light comes together in a characteristic way. *The number 67513 is known from signed Polar pieces with very similar dimensions. Because this piece is unsigned, the number is provided only as a possible model reference and not as certainty.
