knobbly bowl Taxidermy full body mount - Halomitra pileus...

Unusual among the corals, this species — Halomitra pileus — is a free-living, slender, and delicate coral, circular in shape, sometimes dome- or bell-shaped. It has no axial groove. The corallites are widely spaced and increase in size as the colony grows. In small colonies, septocostae radiate in a fan from the initial point. The septa have teeth similar to those of Fungia mushrooms. The tentacles of mature colonies extend only at night; those of juvenile colonies are commonly extended during the day. They are light brown, often with bright pink or purple margins, especially at night when they feed. But their skeleton is a pristine white. The Halomitra in this lot stands out for its particularly knobbly appearance…a real treat for the eye. Please note that the corals in auction are still accompanied by regular CITES documentation. It is expected that the Solomon Islands will publish new regulations on coral export. Any potential ban would not only make these beautiful specimens harder to obtain on the market but also lead to a significant rise in their prices. A truly must-win lot. Base not included; made from reclaimed material and used for photographic purposes only. Happy bidding.
