Erste Ausgabe.- Wegen der detaillierten, oft schonungslos die Zustände im Verlauf der Handelsroute beschreibenden Darstellungsweise war der zu erwartende Konflikt mit den Zensurbehörden möglicherweise der Grund für die anonyme Erscheinungsweise und die Mystifikation über die Herkunft des Buchs und der vorgeblichen Übersetzung aus dem Italienischen.
