KITZIG, W. (20th Century). RMS Empress of Britain on open waters, with sistership Empress of Ireland floating in the background, 20th Century. oil on canvas. Signed lower right "W. Kitzig". 26 3/4" x 40 1/2" canvas. The present work depicts the ocean-liner the Empress of Britain. First launched on 11th November 1905, the Empress travelled between Canada and Europe. Her first transatlantic trip to Quebec was in 1906 and she travelled this route until 1922, war years excepting. Built by Fairfield Shipbuilding in Govan near Glasgow, Scotland, the Empress accommodated 310 first-class passengers, 470 second class passengers and 730 third-class passengers. The Empress of Britain and her sister ship, the Empress of Ireland, seen in the background of this painting, were both the fastest transatlantic ocean-liners in their day.
