Karl Böhm – original handwritten signed portrait sheet with personal inscription – Bayreuth 1963 – “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” Large-format portrait sheet of the Austrian conductor Karl Böhm (1894–1981) with his own signature and personal handwritten dedication, dated Bayreuth 1963. The sheet shows a drawn portrait of Karl Böhm. In the area of the portrait there is the designation or signature “H.E. 1963.” Below the portrait there is the handwritten note “Bayreuth 1963.” Of particular interest is the extensive personal dedication by Karl Böhm to Martin Unfried, which explicitly refers to “Die Meistersinger” and is dated 25 August. Below it is again the characteristic handwritten signature of Karl Böhm. The portrait comes from the estate of Martin Unfried, to whom Karl Böhm’s personal dedication is addressed. The Dorotheum Wien, Department of Books, Autographs and Decorative Graphics, has examined the present portrait based on the submitted images. In the written reply of 31 August 2026, Dorotheum stated: “The dedication and signature are probably authentic.” Thus the sheet has an immediate temporal and content-related connection to Bayreuth and Richard Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.” Karl Böhm was one of the most important conductors of the 20th century and was closely associated with the Bayreuth Festival. Documents and autographs with concrete Bayreuth and Wagner references are of particular interest to collectors of classical music, opera and festival history. In contrast to the frequently offered signed photographs and autograph cards, this is an unusually large-format portrait sheet of about 49 × 35 cm with a personal dedication and historical reference.
