K.milla - "Thus Splashed Zarathustra 01" - Whale

This striking acrylic painting is part of a minimalist series in which bold, graphic color fields are combined with small, hyper-realistic details. A rich teal sea occupies the lower two-thirds of the canvas, while a pale, luminous aqua sky opens up above it. The two planes meet in a razor-sharp horizon, creating a calm yet powerful sense of space and balance. On the left side of the composition, a humpback whale rises steeply out of the water, its dark, ridged body angled towards the sky. Water streams from its raised pectoral fin in thin, glistening lines, while a burst of white foam and small ripples mark the spot where it left the sea. Carefully painted down to the finest detail, the animal breaks through the horizon line and introduces a split second of dramatic movement into the stillness. The contrast between this lively, realistic figure and the clean, abstract planes of color creates a quiet tension that draws the viewer in. The work reflects the artist’s background in graphic design, where clarity, composition and color harmony are essential. The cool, fresh palette and the vast empty sea evoke freedom, depth and contemplation, while the whale’s leap adds a note of pure exuberance. The title, a playful nod to Nietzsche, turns the moment into a small celebration: a giant of the ocean dancing, for an instant, between water and sky. This makes the piece not only visually appealing but also emotionally resonant. K.milla (1976) is a Dutch artist known for blending design sensibilities with painterly storytelling. The paintings are characterized by large, minimalist color fields combined with a single carefully rendered animal or bird, creating a quiet tension between abstraction and narrative. The horizon-like division between the planes gives the works a sense of stillness, space and contemplation. Before focusing on painting, K.milla worked for more than 25 years as a graphic designer and illustrator at the Dutch design studio 2 MAAL EE. As creative work became increasingly digital, the artist felt a growing desire to reconnect with tactile materials, craftsmanship and the physical process of painting. K.milla graduated in Graphic Design from St. Joost Art University, Breda, Netherlands (2002) and is self-taught as a painter. This combination of formal design training and intuitive painterly exploration results in works that balance precision with atmosphere, and simplicity with emotional depth.
