The Hollandsche Spectator was a highly influential 18th-century Dutch magazine (an early opinion periodical) that was printed and published between 1731 and 1735 by the well-known Amsterdam bookseller Hermanus Uytwerf. In total Uytwerf issued 360 numbers. The magazine initially appeared once a week (on Mondays), but due to its success soon twice weekly (Mondays and Fridays). Later the individual issues were bound into 12 volumes. The periodical was based on the English model (The Spectator). Justus van Effen wrote in smooth, modern Dutch essays and short stories (moral sketches) on social topics such as upbringing, fashion, religion and student life. In doing so the work laid the foundation for later Dutch-language literature and the bourgeois morality novel. Drs. W.J.F. Meiners was a Dutch pastor, historian and teacher of history. He combined his theological background with a deep passion for historical source research. Key facts about his life and work: • Minister: He served as pastor for the Reformed Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Den Helder (until 1941) and later in Amsterdam (until 1948). • Historian and Researcher: In addition to his pastorate he was a fully qualified historian. Between 1956 and 1959 he worked, on behalf of the famous historian Pieter Geyl, on the transcription and annotation of Willem Bentinck’s historical correspondence. He frequently published in historical journals, such as Maandblad Amstelodamum, including about the Amsterdam Pachtersoproer of 1748, and also wrote under the pseudonym W. van Stadwijck. • Teacher: In the 1970s he was active as a history teacher. He managed to excite students for genealogical and archival research.
