Jules MARESCHAL, French man of letters (1793–1876), attorney, Chief Inspector of the General Directorate of Fine Arts of the Royal Household. Letter A.S., Paris, December 2, 1829, to Mr. Julius KLAPROTH, Prussian Orientalist. He asks him questions about Chinese numismatics: “1. Do medals in China, as they do here, serve a special and monumental purpose, or are they, as with the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, simply a form of currency? 2. What metals are most commonly used in the production of Chinese medals? 3. Do the manufacturing processes differ significantly from ours?...” 2 pages, in-4°
