Property from the Hilton Head Island Estate, SC Description: Jules Cheret (French, 1836-1932), Theatrophone, Pastel on Paper, 1890, signed 'Cheret' lower left, depicting a young woman in yellow dress with a hat, listening to live music at one of the Théâtrophone's public booths against blue background with gentleman, in a frame with linen mat, with Merrill Chase Galleries sticker verso. Frame size: 64 1/2 in. x 46 1/2 in. Jules Chéret was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of Belle Époque poster art. Born 1836 in Paris, France, he began an apprenticeship with a lithographer at the age of 13, and later studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs. By 1858, Chéret had begun his career by illustrating opera posters, book jackets, and perfume packaging and establishing his own lithography firm in Paris in 1866. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, among many other public and private collections.Measurements: Height: by sight 45 1/2 in. x Width: 27 1/2 in. Condition: Overall good condition, waviness to paper, 3/4 in. brown mark at waist, not viewed out of frame.
