Remarkable deluxe copy No. IV of 50, printed on Arches MBM Ingres paper, signed and dedicated by the author to Jacques d’Orfond on November 7, 1980. Superb binding: black morocco half-leather with corner pieces, spine with gilt raised bands adorned with golden imperial eagles, covers decorated, with gilded arms of Jacques d’Orfond. Illustrated covers preserved. A historical copy enriched with original documents from the 19th century. This volume has the particular feature of being enriched by a significant gathering of historical documents, handwritten correspondence, signed letters, coats of arms, monograms, engravings and genealogical documents, mainly related to the Second Empire, the Bonaparte family, marshals, and the administration of Algeria. Among the remarkable pieces: * Official document dated January 6, 1859, signed “Napoleon (Jérôme)”, concerning the appointment of Jules Sarlande as mayor of Algiers, with a dry seal. * Letter from Marshal Randon, Minister of War, dated June 19, 1860, addressed to the mayor of Algiers. * Official document dated October 20, 1876, bearing the signature of Jules Dufaure, Keeper of the Seals, President of the Council. * Handwritten letter from Prince Victor Napoleon, dated April 7, 1907, addressed to Mr. Sarlande. * Correspondence of the Duchess of Mac-Mahon, Duchess of Magenta, with a business card. * Administrative letter from the Government General of Algeria, dated September 14, 1868, relating to the appointment of Jules Sarlande to the presidency of the General Council of the province of Algiers. * Heraldic documents, monograms and coats of arms of historic families. * Ancient political engraving “The Marshal’s Policy – Peace and Labor.” * Handwritten signed letter by Baudouin de Witt, mentioning Napoleonic family collections at the La Pommerie museum in Dordogne. The work traces the history of the nineteen marshals of the Second Empire, their families and descendants. Bibliography: 600 numbered pages, table of contents starting on page 601, with preliminary pages in Roman numerals. Provenance: Jacques d’Orfond’s library. This enriched copy corresponds to the description in an old sale catalogue, lot no. 249. The collection presents a very fine bibliophilic, historical and documentary interest, both for the rarity of the deluxe print and for the gathering of original correspondence related to several major 19th-century figures. Overall condition satisfactory in light of the photographs. Binding shows some signs of wear. Old documents with folds, foxing and aging marks.
