Josep Miret Aleu (1912–1999) - Crique à Majorque

Josep Miret Aleu (1912–1999) Cala de Mallorca Oil on canvas An attractive oil on canvas by the Spanish painter Josep Miret Aleu (1912–1999), an artist closely linked to Mallorca and especially renowned for his landscapes and seascapes of the island. The work portrays a Mediterranean cove, viewed from an elevated vantage point among large rock formations covered with vegetation. The opening of the cliffs visually leads to an intensely blue sea, while in the background a coastal profile extends, adding depth to the composition. Miret builds the landscape with a luminous painting and visible brushwork, giving special importance to Mediterranean color. The blues and turquoises of the sea contrast with the warm whites of the rock and the greens and yellows of the pines, creating an image of great clarity and serenity. The synthetic treatment of forms and the chromatic freedom place the work within a figurative landscape style with roots in Post-Impressionism. Josep Miret Aleu was born in Barcelona and developed a fundamental part of his artistic career in Mallorca, where he settled in the mid-1940s. His production was especially linked to Mallorcan landscapes and seascapes, with particular attention to Sóller, the Port of Sóller, Andratx and the Serra de Tramuntana. His painting initially received influence from the intense chromatics of Joaquim Mir, later evolving toward a more personal, luminous, and serene interpretation of the Mediterranean landscape. Throughout his career he cultivated different genres and techniques, including landscape, seascape, portrait, and still life, working in oil as well as watercolor and drawing. He exhibited his work in various Spanish and European cities, and is currently represented in private and institutional collections. This painting constitutes a good example of the most characteristic and recognizable aspect of Miret: the pictorial interpretation of the Mallorcan coastal landscape, where light, the sea, and Mediterranean vegetation become the main protagonists. The work is signed “Miret” in the lower right corner.
