John Webber (1751–1793) - A Man of Mangea / Un Homme de Mangea

This engraving presents an ethnographic portrait of an indigenous inhabitant of Mangaia (Mangea) in the Cook Islands, published in 1784 as part of the official illustrated account of Captain James Cook's third Pacific voyage, A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean — one of the most celebrated exploration publications of the eighteenth century. The composition documents the man's traditional hairstyle and personal ornaments with meticulous attention, including a feather pierced through the earlobe — a detail recorded in the journal of the surgeon William Anderson, who observed a Mangaian man insert a knife he had been presented into a large slit in his lobe. Cook's expedition called briefly at Mangaia in March 1777, and Webber's original drawing provided the basis for this engraved plate, one of seventy-eight illustrations produced from the voyage for the 1784 publication. John Webber (1751–1793) was a celebrated English landscape artist and draughtsman who served as the official expeditionary artist on Cook's third voyage (1776–1780). Tasked with creating a comprehensive visual record of the peoples, places, and natural history encountered across the Pacific, he produced an extraordinary body of work that remains among the most significant visual documents of eighteenth-century exploration.
