Portrait of Franz Friedrich Wilhelm von Fürstenberg (1729–1810) – Johann Christoph Rincklake (1764–1813), 1792 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions of painting with frame: 64 × 56 cm Frame: about 4 cm wide Period: 18th century Date: 1792 School: German / Westphalian Subject: Franz Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Fürstenberg Artist: Johann Christoph Rincklake (1764–1813), attribution documented by the labels on the back and by the signature/monogram on the painting Description Important German male portrait from the late 18th century, depicting Franz Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Fürstenberg (1729–1810), a leading figure in the political and religious life of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. The subject is shown half-length, elegantly dressed according to the fashion of the time, with a dark coat, white shirt and tie. The frontal pose and the gaze directed at the observer confer an official and authoritative character to the portrait. Franz von Fürstenberg served as minister of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster, privy councilor and vicar general; he is also remembered for his role in the administrative and educational reforms of the territory. His biography is documented by the Deutsche Biographie and German museum collections. The identity of the figure is particularly significant also because Johann Christoph Rincklake is documented as the author of portraits of Franz von Fürstenberg. The LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur indeed preserves a Bildnis von Franz Freiherr von Fürstenberg (1729–1810), oil on panel, attributed to Rincklake, and the Stadtmuseum Münster documents another portrait of Fürstenberg executed by Rincklake. Labels and documentation on the back The painting retains several historic and handwritten labels on the back, which are an important element for reading the work. One of the typed labels reads: „Originalgemälde: Freiherr von Fürstenberg Fürstbischöflicher Minister” i.e.: “Original painting: Freiherr von Fürstenberg – Minister of the Prince-Bishop.” Another handwritten label identifies: Johann Christoph Rincklake 1764–1813 Restored in 1986 Original canvas There is also a second handwritten label related to the subject: Freiherr Franz Friedrich Wilhelm von Fürstenberg 7.8.1729 – 16.9.1810 Deutscher Politiker The biographical information on the label matches the data documented by historical-biographical sources: Franz Friedrich Wilhelm von Fürstenberg was born on 7 August 1729 and died on 16 September 1810. Condition The painting shows signs of age, craquelure, and a surface with traces of the conservation history of the work. On the back there is an indication of restoration carried out in 1986. The canvas retains its original support according to the label on the back. Careful observation of the photographs is recommended for a full assessment of the state of conservation. Frame The painting is set in a non-era but aesthetically valuable frame, particularly suited to the presentation of the portrait. The frame measures about 4 cm in width and greatly contributes to the decorative presence of the work.
