Joan Miro (1893-1983) - Gat i mà

JOAN MIRÓ (1893–1983) Gat i mà, 1970 Original color lithograph on paper Signed on the plate Published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona Sheet size: approximately 83.5 × 60 cm Print image size: approximately 70 × 50 cm Original color lithograph by Joan Miró, titled Gat i mà (Cat and Hand), created in 1970 and published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona. The work is signed on the plate in the lower right corner. The signature forms part of the lithographic matrix and, therefore, is printed on the work, not added later with pencil. The edition is documented in various specialized sources. Bonhams identifies this work as a 1970 color lithograph, signed on the plate, published by Sala Gaspar of Barcelona, belonging to an edition of 1,000 copies, with a sheet of approximately 83.1 × 59.3 cm. ICONOGRAPHY Gat i mà is a characteristic composition of Miró’s plastic universe. On a neutral background appears a black cat, built with a broad and energetic stroke, accompanied by a multicolor bird and the representation of a hand. The composition also incorporates an eight-pointed star, one of the recurring signs in Miró’s visual language. The contrast between the black masses and the colors blue, red, yellow, and green, together with the freedom of gesture and simplification of forms, summarize some of the fundamental traits of Miró’s graphic production during his mature period. RELATIONSHIP TO THE WORK CONSERVATED IN THE BBVA COLLECTION The composition is especially documented by the existence of an original by Joan Miró titled Gat i ma preserved in the BBVA Spain Collection, dated around 1970, with inventory number P05583. The BBVA original is done in gouache and Chinese ink on the front, and pencil, Chinese ink, and wash on the back. The BBVA Collection sheet notes that the perforations on the reverse suggest the drawing could have served as a model for an engraving or lithograph. This lithograph reproduces this composition in a format very close to that of the BBVA original.
