Although his work remained more low-profile than that of the great masters of the early century, he fully fits within the tradition of the street and salon artists of Montmartre in the 1960s and 1970s. Unlike the painters of Place du Tertre who confined themselves to purely touristy and figurative reproductions of the Sacré-Cœur, Jean-Pierre Collin distinguished himself by a style influenced by mid-century modern and gentle cubism. His works (often made with gouache, pastel or oil) transform urban landscapes and seascapes into a sequence of linear cadences and pared-down geometric shapes. His representations of sailboats or urban silhouettes rely heavily on verticality. If he sold his works for a long time directly to passersby and art enthusiasts of the Parisian hill, his paintings now attract the attention of collectors who are passionate about 1970s design and graphic art.
