Although his work remained less well known than that of the great masters of the early century, he fully fits within the tradition of street and salon artists of Montmartre in the 1960s and 1970s. Unlike the painters of Place du Tertre who confined themselves to purely touristy and figurative reproductions of the Sacré-Cœur, Jean-Pierre Collin distinguished himself with a style influenced by mid-century modern and soft cubism. His works (often created in gouache, pastel, or oil) transform urban landscapes and seascapes into a sequence of linear cadences and pared-down geometric shapes. His depictions of sailing ships or city silhouettes play heavily on verticality. If he long sold his works directly to passersby and art enthusiasts on the Parisian hill, his paintings today attract the attention of collectors passionate about 1970s design and graphic art.
